Winyah Band phot by Harrison Hargrave

If you’ve spent any time tuned into WXRY lately, you’ve probably heard us spinning Winyah. With an infectious blend of gritty indie rock, southern swagger, and raw emotional depth, this South Carolina five-piece has quietly crossed over from a local best-kept secret to one of the most buzzed-about new live acts in the country.

But if you ask the band, they’ll tell you they’re just trying to bring a piece of home wherever the highway takes them.

Formed in Friction, Rooted in the Soil

Winyah didn’t materialize out of a corporate boardroom; they grew out of the humid nights and small-town restlessness of coastal South Carolina. Formed in 2023, the band takes its name from Winyah Bay—the sprawling geographic landmark where four out of the five members grew up.

The lineup is a tight-knit unit of musicians who spent years grinding on the independent circuit before joining forces:

  • Thomas Rowland (Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar)

  • Luke Gordon (Lead Guitar)

  • Stephen Russell (Bass)

  • Robert Buffington Jr. (Keyboards)

  • Jacob “Jake” Riley (Drums)

The early days of the band were defined by pure, unfiltered hustle. When they first came together, they had exactly three songs written and a major live slot booked five weeks away. To pull it off, they bunked on a friend’s couch, crammed into a borrowed warehouse every single night, and built their entire sonic profile from the ground up.

That trial-by-fire chemistry is exactly why their debut music feels so explosive. From the cathartic, driving energy of “Feel It” to the wide-eyed, vulnerable storytelling of “Lay Me Down,” Winyah builds whole worlds out of the gut-level realities of growing up, changing, and pushing forward.

The 25-Million-Stream Hustle

The world is rapidly catching on to what South Carolinians knew first. To date, Winyah has amassed over 25 million global streams. Their relentless “live band first” ethos carried them through a massive breakout stretch, which included playing major national festivals like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, alongside a sold-out headline run that hit historic rooms like New York’s Mercury Lounge.

Just this week, frontman Thomas Rowland kept the momentum moving by stopping by the Relix offices for a stripped-down, captivating session, treating listeners to acoustic renditions of their debut album tracks and dropping a sneak peek at a brand-new, unreleased song from their highly anticipated sophomore record.

The Homecoming: Winyah Live at The Senate

For all their national success, the band’s heart remains firmly in the Palmetto State. As part of their extensive late-summer tour alongside opening act Penelope Road, Winyah is coming back to the Capital City for a massive hometown show.
